Custom Bikepacking Build: Salsa Fargo Ti with Rohloff + Belt Drive
We love a good bikepacking build, the kind of rig that’s built to go the distance, carry everything you need, and do it all with minimal fuss. Recently, we had the pleasure of building up a dream machine for a customer looking to tackle big adventures off the beaten path. The foundation? A titanium Salsa Fargo - and from there, it only gets better.
The Vision
The rider came to us with a clear goal: create a low-maintenance, high-durability, all-terrain bikepacking setup. From there all it took was sourcing the right parts!
The Frame: Salsa Fargo Titanium
We started with the Fargo Ti, a proven adventure platform with a supple, compliant ride and geometry optimized for drop bars and off-road touring. Titanium is a top-tier material choice here - lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and built to last a lifetime.
Drivetrain: Rohloff Speedhub + Gates Carbon Belt
The centerpiece of the build is the Rohloff 14-speed internal gear hub, paired with a Gates Carbon Drive belt system. This combination is unbeatable for long-distance travel: zero derailleur worries, incredibly low maintenance, and a sealed internal system that thrives in mud, sand, and snow. The belt is silent, clean, and lasts far longer than a traditional chain!
Braking & Shifting: SRAM Force + Gehbla Robox
Stopping power & shifting comes courtesy of SRAM Force hydraulic brakes and levers. Smooth modulation and consistent performance under load were must-haves for the customer, and these deliver. Keep in mind, these shifter have to be modified for the Rholoff hub to mesh with them. To do this we used a Gehbla Robox system which replaces the original shiftbox allowing shifting with shifters other than the original Rohloff Twister, pretty techy if you ask us!
Lighting System: SON Hub + Edelux Light
To keep electronics charged and lights running, we installed a SON dynamo front hub and SON Edelux light. It’s ultra-reliable system, with minimal drag, and allows the rider to stay self - sufficient even on multi-day trips far from power outlets.
Tires: Vittoria Mezcal
We went with Vittoria Mezcal tires for their fast-rolling tread and excellent grip in mixed conditions. Perfect for everything from forest roads to rocky climbs and gravel descents.
Saddle: Brooks C13
Rounding out the build is a Brooks C13 saddle - light, weatherproof, and flexible enough to take the edge off long hours in the saddle. A perfect match for this kind of endurance-focused setup.
The Result:
This build is ready for big miles and even bigger adventures. It’s rugged, elegant, and designed to perform with minimal maintenance - a true go-anywhere companion. We’re stoked with how it turned out.
Whether you’re dreaming of your own custom bikepacking build or just want to geek out over high-spec rigs, swing by the shop - we’d love to talk bikes.
